TRIGGERED – An Invitation To Transform
What if everything that triggers you is seeking to transform you? What if the things that trigger you aren't here to keep you stuck, but to show you where you have an opportunity to grow?
A trigger is simply a moment when something inside us gets activated. It might be anger, fear, hurt, frustration, jealousy, anxiety, or a strong emotional reaction that seems bigger than the situation itself.
The important thing is what we do with that activation.
We can use it to blame someone else.
We can tell ourselves, This always happens to me.
We can become attached to the story of what was done to us.
Or we can become curious.
What is this showing me about myself?
A trigger can be information
From a spiritual perspective, the people and situations that activate us can sometimes shine a light on beliefs, wounds, fears, and patterns that are ready to be transformed.
This doesn't mean someone else's behaviour is acceptable.
It doesn't mean we caused what happened.
And it doesn't mean we should stay in situations that aren't healthy for us.
It means that once something has happened, we have a choice about what we do with our emotional response.
Perhaps someone disappoints you and you notice an intense fear of being abandoned.
Perhaps someone is upset with you and you immediately feel responsible for making everything okay.
Perhaps you are criticized and suddenly feel that you aren't good enough.
The present moment may have activated something older.
And that awareness gives you an opportunity.
From reaction to choice
This is where EFT tapping can be so powerful.
Rather than telling ourselves, I shouldn't feel this way, we can acknowledge what is happening:
Something about this is really upsetting me.
I can feel how strongly I'm reacting.
There must be something important underneath this.
I'm willing to understand what this is showing me.
As we tap, we can begin to separate the present situation from the old emotional story attached to it.
We may discover beliefs such as:
I have to keep everyone happy.
I can't trust people.
I have to be perfect.
My needs don't matter.
I'm responsible for everyone else's feelings.
Once these patterns become conscious, we have more choice.
We don't have to keep reacting from them.
You are not your trigger
One of the most empowering shifts we can make is moving from:
This person triggered me.
to:
Something in me was activated, and I'm willing to explore it.
That small shift brings our power back to us.
It doesn't excuse another person's behaviour.
It doesn't deny our feelings.
It simply recognizes that our healing is ultimately our responsibility.
We don't have to remain trapped in the story.
We can feel the emotion, learn from it, release what no longer serves us, and choose how we want to respond.
The invitation
The next time you find yourself strongly triggered, pause before deciding what the experience means.
Take a breath.
Notice what you're feeling.
And perhaps ask:
What is this showing me?
What am I believing right now?
Is this feeling familiar?
What am I ready to release?
A trigger doesn't have to become an identity.
It doesn't have to become proof that someone else is the problem.
It can simply become a doorway to greater awareness.
Because perhaps the purpose of being triggered isn't to keep you looking outward at what happened.
Perhaps it is an invitation to look inward, reclaim your choice, and transform what is ready to be healed.
**The trigger is the information.
The transformation is what you choose to do with it.**
