ORIGINS OF BOWEN.

Bowen Therapy was developed in the 1950s by Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916–1982) in Geelong, Australia. Despite having no formal medical training, Bowen possessed an intuitive understanding of the human body and its mechanics. He observed how subtle movements could influence the body's structure and function, leading him to create a unique form of soft tissue manipulation.

Bowen's technique involved gentle, precise rolling movements over muscles, tendons, and fascia, interspersed with pauses to allow the body to integrate the effects. This approach aimed to stimulate the body's innate ability to balance and align itself.

By the mid-1970s, Bowen was reportedly treating up to 13,000 patients annually, with an estimated success rate of 80% to 85% in alleviating various conditions . His work gained recognition, leading to a government inquiry by the Victorian Department of Health in 1975, which acknowledged the effectiveness of his treatments.

Before his passing in 1982, Bowen authorized six individuals to learn and continue his work. Among them, Oswald (Ossie) Rentsch, with the assistance of Bowen's secretary, Rene Horwood, meticulously documented the technique. In 1987, Ossie and his wife Elaine established the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia, ensuring the preservation and dissemination of Bowen's method. Today, Bowen Therapy is practiced in over 40 countries, continuing Bowen's legacy of promoting balance and well-being through gentle, non-invasive techniques.
